How much do Scentsy Consultants make?

There really is no way to determine the average Scentsy commission check, there are a couple reasons why. First, there are all sorts of reasons why people decide to become a Scentsy consultant, here are a few:

* They Join scentsy for fun, because they love the product
* Join to receive a discount when they purchase Scentsy
* They already have a full time job, and want to sell Scentsy on the side
* Join to make a few extra bucks each month to pay off bills
* Join to sell Scentsy part time
* Join to sell Scentsy Full time

Obviously, someone who joins just to receive a discount on personal purchases is going to have a much smaller commission check than someone who sells Scentsy full time to support their entire family. Some consultants work their Scentsy Business a couple hours a week, and some run their Scentsy business full time and support their entire family doing it (like I do).

Second, consultants focus on different aspects of their business more than others. Some consultants focus entirely on selling product, and don't want to worry about building a team, some only want to focus on building a large successful team and don't want to sell as much, and then some focus on both equally. However you decide to run your Scentsy business is up to you, there are MANY successful consultants making a living either way, it just comes down to personal preference.

Because of this, there really is no average Scentsy commission check, it just depends on you, how you decide to run your business, and having the right tools to run your business successfully. But, one thing is for sure, you can become very successfull as a Scentsy consultant if your willing to work hard and not give up.

Some consultants make 6 figures selling scentsy, and some make a couple hundred dollars per month to make their car payment. My husband and I sell Scentsy full time and support our family doing it, we're able to stay at home with our two daughters and live very comfortably. It just comes down to your drive, how you want to run your scentsy business, and how much you want to make.

Why RECRUITING is so important to your Scentsy Business

I wanted to talk a little about recruiting and why it is so important to your Scentsy business. A lot of consultants don't realize why they should recruit along with selling the product and why it is so important to building a successful Scentsy business. When you recruit a new consultant, you are their Sponsor and as long as you are at least a Lead Consultant with Scentsy, you can earn commission (up to 9%) off everything your new recruit sells as a bonus in addition to your own personal sales commission. This bonus does not take any commission away from your new recruit at all, it is simply a bonus from Scentsy.

For example, lets say you are a SuperStar Consultant:

☺ You have 10 Consultants on your team
☺ Your Personal Sales were $2,000
☺ Your Group Wholesale Volume for the month was $9,000
First off, your personal commission would be 30% because you sold $2,000 for the month, so 30% of $2,000 = $600.
Because you are a SuperStar Consultant you also receive a 7% bonus off your own Personal Wholesale Volume, which is 75% of your Retail Volume sold ($2,000 x .75 = $1,500). 7% of $1,500 = $105. You also receive a 7% Bonus off your Group Wholesale Volume, but you first need to subtract your Personal Wholesale Volume since you already took a bonus from that ($9,000 - $1,500 = $7,500) 7% of $7,500 = $525.

Your check for the month would be $600 + $105 + $525 = $1,230!
Nearly half of your check was from your team's sales, you didn't have to do any extra work for this and you received a Free Bonus.

Once you begin to start growing a very large team you can imagine the possibilities when you start multiplying these numbers.

For example, lets say you are a Director:

☺ You have 300 consultants on your team
☺ Your personal sales are again $2,000
☺ Your Group Wholesale Volume for the month was $100,000
☺ You now receive up to 9% bonus because you are a Director

Using the same math from before with the new numbers, your Personal Commission would be $600, you would receive a 9% bonus on your Wholesale Volume which is $135, but this month you are receiving a bonus of up to $9,000 for your Group Sales! That's a commission check of almost $10,000 in one month!

When I bring up these numbers, it may sound impossible to reach them to you, but I promise it is definitely possible. For example, lets say you are going to make a goal to recruit 1 new person every month, and you will also inspire and help your recruits to make the same goal every month. In just 6 months you could have over 60 consultants, and in just 1 year you would have over 4,000 consultants. But we know sometimes you will get recruits that just don't have the time for their Scentsy business, so to be realistic we will cut that number in half 2,000 consultants. Lets say the average order was just $300; 2000 x $300 = $600,000!! You can receive a percentage of $600,000, if you made just 5% of $600,000 that would be a $30,000 commission check.

It may seem impossible, but I know consultants that have over 6,000 people in their group after being in scentsy for just a few years! It definitely takes a lot of work, but I promise it is possible, and it is worth it.

When Cathy Flanders, 41, of Plano, Texas, started burning candles for their pleasant smell in the spring of 1997, it never occurred to her she could be poisoning her family.

Three years, a serious illness, and a lawsuit later, Flanders has a lesson to share with anyone buying scented candles: Watch out for metal wicks. Lead emitted by this type of candle is a serious health hazard.

"Candles are fast becoming one of the most common unrecognized causes of poor indoor air quality," says Diane Walsh Astry, Executive Director of the Health House Project, an American Lung Association education project in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Flanders' woes started when Cathy was shopping at a clothing store and spotted some candles whose labels promised to fill her house with the pleasant fragrances of "winter" and "spring." Within six months of burning the candles, she noticed soot damage around her house. But Cathy didn't pinpoint the source of the problem until after Ron Bailey of Bailey Engineering in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, analyzed the Flanders' candles and discovered lead emissions.

Around that time, 11-year-old Andrew Flanders' grades dropped precipitously. His teacher wondered if he had attention deficit disorder. When blood tests revealed an elevated level of lead, the Flanders promptly sent him to live with his aunt.

"The lead deposits in our home are such that we could not sell the house if we wanted to," says Flanders. As for the candles, the doctor ordered a total ban. Testing revealed the lead level in the Flanders' home to be 40 milligrams per square foot -- 27 times the limit allowed in Housing and Urban Development homes.

Aromatherapy
The Flanders aren't the only ones falling victim to pleasant-smelling candles with toxic wicks. Candle sales in general have skyrocketed in recent years, according to the National Candle Association in Washington D.C., from $500 million in 1995 to $2.3 billion in 1999. Part of the candle craze may be due to new interest in aromatherapy, a type of alternative medicine in which odors are used for relaxation or to treat illness.

Ironically, the very candles sometimes used for aromatherapy can cause serious health problems. The chief culprits are candles with wicks made with metal cores.

"Some candle makers use metal-core wicks because cotton wicks are often limp and fall over into the wax, extinguishing the flame," explains Jerome O. Nriagu, Ph.D., a professor of environmental chemistry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor who has studied scented candles.

Lead poisoning can lead to behavior changes and damage internal organs, especially the kidneys. Cathy's husband, Kip, had his gall bladder removed because of an illness he blames on the candles.

Metal Wicks
Nriagu measured the lead released from 14 brands of candles. He found that burning four metal-wick candles for two hours can result in airborne lead concentrations that pose a threat to human health. People with weak immune systems, including children and the elderly, are particularly at risk.

"Besides breathing lead fumes, children can be exposed to even more lead that is deposited on the floor, furniture, and walls because they often put their hands in their mouths," says Nriagu. After similar research in Australia, lead wicks in candles were banned there in September 1999. But despite the urging of experts like Nriagu, the candles are still legal in the United States.

Not all candles -- or even all scented candles -- cause hazardous pollution. But since labels won't tell which ones are safe, Astry and other candle experts offer this advice:

Watch out for shiny metal wire inside the wicks of candles. Opt for pure paper or cotton instead.

Keep wicks trimmed to one-quarter inch for more complete combustion, and keep candles out of drafts. Windiness blows more toxins into the air and causes inefficient burning.

Watch out for slow-burning candles with additives. (These candles often feel greasy to the touch.) Instead, look for pure beeswax candles, which emit less pollution.

For aromatherapy, put a few drops of scented oil in a defuser -- a tray made to fit on a lightbulb. Or you can put the drops into some boiling water.

Don't use candles in jars when the candle leaves a soot ring on the jar's lip. The soot may be an indication of lead dust.

Andrew Flanders, now 14, has moved back home. And the family is still hopeful their lawsuit will win compensation from the store that sold them the candles. But no matter what the result of the suit, Cathy only wishes she'd had some whiff of the danger when she first spotted those innocent-looking candles among the racks of shirts and pants.

Some Candles Emit Dangerous Levels Of Lead

A University of Michigan School of Public Health study of candles purchased from stores in southeast Michigan shows that some candles on the market today are made with wicks that have either lead or lead cores that emit potentially dangerous levels of lead into the air.

The study is by Jerome Nriagu, a professor of environmental health sciences, who examined lead emissions from 15 different brands of candles made in the United States, Mexico and China. He also examined the concentration levels of lead that lingered in the air in an enclosed space, such as a room measuring 12 feet by 12 feet and 10 feet high, after one hour and then again for five hours.

Nriagu's study showed that lead emission rates for the candles ranged between 0.5 and 327 micrograms per hour. After burning the candle for one hour, the lead levels in the air of an enclosed space were estimated to range from 0.04 to 13.1 micrograms per cubic meter, which compares to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommendation of 1.5 micrograms per cubic meter for ambient air. After one hour, five of the candles Nriagu tested emitted unsafe levels of lead into the air that measured greater than 1.5 micrograms per cubic meter.

After five hours, the lead levels in an enclosed space ranged from an estimated 0.21 to 65.3 micrograms per cubic meter. Candles produced in China and the United States released the highest levels of lead into the air.

Regular exposure to lead in this manner in confined spaces could pose health risks to people with weak immune systems, especially children and the elderly, Nriagu said.

"Lead poisoning remains one of the most serious environmental health diseases in this country and other parts of the world. It affects many organ systems and biochemical processes with the most serious sequelae often occurring in the central nervous, cardiovascular and blood systems," Nriagu said.

Nriagu's findings are consistent with an Australian study due to be published in the journal Science of the Total Environment. In that study, Mike van Alphen of Lead Sense, an independent consultancy in Australia involved in environmental lead testing, lead exposure investigations and consumer product testing, examined a single brand of candle sold in Australia. The candle he examined released up to 1,130 micrograms of lead per hour.

Studies have shown that the central nervous system of children is particularly sensitive to lead. Some of the most damaging neuropsychological effects of lead poisoning of young children include learning disabilities, reduced psychometric intelligence and behavioral disorders. These effects have been associated with chronic low-level exposure to lead and are believed to be irreversible.

Nriagu's study measured the rate of lead emission in a laboratory setting using a flux chamber. The lead released as candle fume was collected in nitric acid and analyzed by means of an atomic absorption spectrometer. In addition to measuring emission rates, he calculated concentration levels of lead in the air in an enclosed space after one hour and then again, for five hours.

"The half-life of lead in air obviously would make a difference in terms of it being inhaled. A recent study has shown that particles emitted by candles during a normal burn are sub-micron in size and should remain suspended in the atmosphere for some time. Even if a particle is deposited after only a short trajectory through the atmosphere, it adds to the lead burden in the house dust. Airborne lead represents a hazard in more ways than one," Nriagu said.

House dust is widely recognized as a primary route of childhood lead exposure through hand-to-mouth activities.

"Assuming that only 50 percent of the lead released is deposited in an area measuring 12 feet by 15 feet (such as a living room), we estimate that the loading of the lead to house dust will exceed the U.S. EPA guideline of 100 micrograms per square meter by burning one of the Chinese candles for a few hours. Our data thus shows that burning leaded candles can result in extensive contamination of the air and house dust with lead," Nriagu said.

In general, Nriagu found that metal cores in Chinese candles were made of either pure lead or lead alloy while those made in the United States or Mexico consisted of zinc or lead-containing alloys. Lead was detected in small quantities in emissions from zinc-based wicks, suggesting that the lead may be a common contaminant in the zinc, wick or wax. The levels of lead were small, but still may represent a health risk over a long period of time.

Not all candles are made with wicks that have metallic cores. The practice is primarily used with candles that are needed to burn longer, such as scented or ceremonial candles. A metal core is used to provide rigidity to the wick which provides an even and slower burn rate, and to reduce the mushrooming at the tip. Since lead and its alloys melt at relatively low temperature, a large fraction of the wick core material is volatilized as the candle is burned.

"Because it is costly and difficult to control lead once it is released to the environment and medical treatment does not fully reverse the health effects, the optimal strategy for minimizing the risk involves the reduction or elimination of exposure in various forms. This study shows that there are still other important domestic sources of lead exposure that have escaped public scrutiny and legislative control. Leaded candles were recently banned in Australia, and we recommend a similar action in this country," Nriagu said.

There really is no way to determine the average Scentsy commission check, there are a couple reasons why. First, there are all sorts of reasons why people decide to become a Scentsy consultant, here are a few:

Q. How long will our Candle Bars last?
A. Scentsy Candle Bars will last a minimum of 50 - 80
hours. It depends on the strength of the fragrance and
how strong you personally like your scents. Open
windows, humidifiers, and house fans may alter the time
the scents last.

Q. What kind of Light Bulbs does Scentsy Products use?
A. Scentsy Deluxe warmers use a 25 watt Bulb, and Scentsy Plug in warmers use a 15 watt Bulb. These Bulbs can be kind of tough to find in stores, but you can buy these bulbs online for cheap, if you click "Buy Scentsy Candles" above it will take you to the Scentsy shopping cart where they can be purchased online. Once you get to the shopping cart, the Bulbs are under the "Indidual Warmer Pieces" category.

Q. Can Scentsy wax be used in a Non-Scentsy Warmer?
A. Of course, but I wouldn't recommend it. Scentsy's warmers are made specifically for the Scentsy wax, they are set to reach a perfect temperature, they get just warm enough to release the scent into the air without releasing any of the chemicals with it. This is one reason Scentsy Warmers and Scentsy Bars are much safer then regular Candles.

Q. What kind of wax is used when making our Candle Bars?
A. Scentsy uses a food-grade petroleum based wax. Scentsy chose this wax because of its superior scent loading ability, melting point and firmness. Scentsy looked at their waxes, but could not find a good quality vegetable based wax that held the scents. The type of wax we use is a not an issue, with regard to the chemicals released while burning any traditional wicked candles, including tea lights. Scentsy Warmers only warm the scent out of the wax - the wax remains in the warmer, thus there is no danger of chemicals being released into the home. You will end up with a piece of non smelling wax that you dispose of and replace with a new Scentsy candle bar. No wick, no match, no flame, no soot, no smoke, and no wax evaporation!

Q. What is food grade petroleum wax?
A. Scentsy’s food grade petroleum wax is the same wax they spray on apples in the grocery stores, to give them their shine.

Q. What type of oil does Scentsy use in their candles?
A. Scentsy uses key fragrance oil which is the highest grade of oil before processing.

Q. Do I use a whole candle bar at a time?
A. One Scentsy Bar comes in a clamshell with six break-a-part cubes. Choose your favorite candle bar scent, break off one or two cubes and place in our warmer. Next turn on your warmer...relax and enjoy. You can add more cubes as time goes on or can switch out to enjoy another scent.

Q. How hot does the wax get when warmed?
A. The wax temperature is very low, just above body temperature. The wax never gets hot enough to burn anyone since we use a low watt light bulb.

Q. How do I clean the wax out of the warmer?
A. While the wax is warmed you can pour it out into a disposable container, back into its original container, or simply wipe the warmer with some paper towels. You may also place the warmer lid in the freezer for 5-10 minimum and the wax should easily slide out.

Q. What wattage of light bulb does the warmer use?
A. A standard 25 watt, small based light bulb. Every new warmer comes with its own light bulb. Our Plug In Warmers uses a standard 15 watt nightlight bulb.

Q. How much is shipping?
A. Shipping is always free for home, basket and book parties with $150 or more in total retail sales. Direct ship orders to individual customers add 10%. Shipping to Hawaii or Alaska is 10% with a 20% shipping charge for direct ship orders in those states.

Q. How long until delivery?
A. Approximately 2 to 3 weeks from when the Scentsy Party closes or an order is placed.

A. Yes. Independent Consultants can sell Scentsy products online via their online Scentsy replicated website. All online advertising must first be approved by the home office.

Q. Can I sell on eBay?
A. No. In order to maintain the quality and integrity of Scentsy products, Scentsy Consultants are prohibited from selling on eBay or any other auction type website.

Q. Can I make my own personal website?
A. Yes! Scentsy Independent Consultants can make their own website, however all independent websites must be approved by the home office. You will have access to the Policy and Procedures once you become a consultant. There are specific details here for you to follow when creating a site.

Q. Can I sell at fairs and events?
A. Yes! Scentsy Independent Consultants are allowed to Sell Scentsy at local events and expos. You can elect to purchase inventory to resale at the events or take orders only. The choice is yours. Policy is only one Scentsy consultant per event, the first to register and pay for the event.

Q. Are there any monthly or quarterly sales requirements?
A. The policy to remain an active consultant you must place at least one $150, or more, order in a quarter. Every time you place a qualifying $150 or more order, the quarter is rest.

Q. Are there any requirements to earn commissions on my team?
A. To earn commissions on your team, you must be a Lead Consultant and sell a minimum of $500, per month, in personal retail volume to qualify.
A Lead Consultant is a person who has $500 in monthly personal retail sales, $1000 in Group Wholesale Volume in a month and one active frontline Scentsy Consultant.

Q. Are we required to pay for any of the Host Rewards?
A. A $5 Host Rewards Fee - Party Fee can be paid either by the Host or the Consultant. Many Consultants use this as a thank you gift for the Host and pay the fee themselves.

Q. How much is a Scentsy Starter Kit?
A. Scentsy Starter Kits are $99 plus shipping and handling. Your Starter kit contains all 80+ scent samples, catalogs, order forms, business cards, and everything you will need to start your successful Scentsy Candle Business. This also includes your website for the first three months.

Q. How long does it take to get my Scentsy Starter Kit?
A. Scentsy generally ships starter kits within 72 hours of receiving your application. Starter Kits are shipped via UPS.

Q. Is the Consultant Scent of the Month Kit a required purchase?
A. No. We are never required to buy products. Scentsy does offer an “Opt In” Scent of the Month Kit and a Warmer of the Month Kit to its consultants. These kits are offered at a substantial discount price to help grow your business.

Q. Who do customers write their checks to? Scentsy or the Consultant?
A. Checks need to be made out to the Consultant as we submit party orders online. At home parties, you as the consultant, may ask the guests to write their checks out to the Hostess, and then the Hostess writes one check out to you the consultant. For customers paying by check, payment is made using the Consultant's credit card or a debit card after the customer’s checks clear. Scentsy does not charge consultants to process credit cards, and accepts VISA, MC, AMEX, and Discover.

Q. Can Host carry or save their Host benefits for later use?
A. No. Host must use their 1/2 price and free products earned at the time they submit their party or they will lose their benefits. They do not carry over.

Q. Are Consultants allowed to purchase Scentsy Candles at a discount and if so, what is the discount?
A. As a Scentsy Independent Consultant, we pay for our product upfront and then are issued our commission on the 10th of each month in the form of a paper check. If you are a new consultant, you would enter the order or party and earn your commission when they issue checks the following month.

Q. When are commission checks issued?
A. Scentsy post commissions amounts in our work station on the tenth of the month. The commission checks are mailed out on the 10th of each month. Your check does have to be at least $30 or they will hold it till the next month or until your commission reaches $30.

Q. Does Scentsy ship to APOs and FPOs?
A. Presently, Scentsy does not ship to APOs or FPOs, because UPS does not deliver to these.
